Home>Railroad>Maine Central (MEC)
The Maine Central (MEC) started as two railroads that merged in 1862. The Kennebec & Portland was built in the 1840's from Yarmouth Junction on the Saint Lawrence & Atlantic to Augusta and up the Kennebec River to Waterville. This became the lower road main line. The second was the Androscoggin & Kennebec, first built between the Saint Lawrence & Atlantic at Danville Junction and Waterville, then extended from Danville Junction to Cumberland Junction. This became the Back Road main line. In time other roads would be absorbed and the lines of the MEC would stretch to St. Johnsbury, VT, Moosehead Lake, Rockland, and Eastport. Pan Am is the current operator of the back road and has a section here. St-PanAm
